Recommendations

So I have a few weeks off for mid year break and I’m looking for sme recommendations. I’ve started reading a few articles, though there has been no real direction. I have a pretty extensive library and I’m kind of at the point where i’m thinking, “where do I start?” My interests are wide ranging, literary theory, film theory, politics, relgion, aesthetics, the general Continental stuff. So, that said, does anyone have any recommendations? If you like, you could let me know why I should read your recommendation. I’ll also try and post up any notes I make along the way.

hi nathan, read Hans-Johann Glock’s “what is analytic philosophy” + his article “does ontology exist”. Continental ’stuff’ can only be understood in its relation to analytic philosophy. after this, if you want to make up strong foundations, I suggest you read Frege’s “The Foundations of Arithmetic” and then Husserl. the debate between two traverses the field.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will definitely check them out. I know I have the Frege text, though I’ll have to source the other material. I have just finished reading Heller-Roazen’s article on Averroës, Philosophy before the Law: Averroës’s Decisive Treatise. Heller-Roazen is a fascinating writer and philosopher. Undoubtedly the same must be said for Averroës.

Is this more of ‘for fun’ reading (or at least not for a particular project)? Check out David Wills’s Dorsality if you haven’t already. An interesting consideration of the place of ‘technology’ thought through continental philosophy.

Hey Matthew, basically the reading is just for fun inbetween semesters. I have read Dorsality, though the question of technology is an interesting one obviously beginning with the Greeks and mor recently Heidegger and Bernad Steigler. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

Sounds good! I think Dorsality is certainly something that can be read in a more enjoyable manner than you might rigorously run through during serious study time. I tried to check your ‘about’ page but didn’t learn much – where are you going to school, if you don’t mind me asking?

Yeah, I really need to update that. I’m currently studying Philosophy, Political Theory, and I’m thinking of taking on French next year at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.
